Flavors December 12th – 18th

December 11, 2009 by dojogelato

The cooler it gets outside the more inspired we are to transform some of our favorite flavors into gelato! For the next few days at Dojo:

Mexican Vanilla

Cranberry Orange Sorbetto

Vietnamese Coffee (with locally roasted La Terza espresso)

Beurre Noisette Brittle (Brown butter with crushed peanut brittle pieces throughout. Yum!)

Rose Petal Pistachio (Can a gelato be thought of as lovely?)

Dutch Chocolate

Organic Lavender and Honey

Peppermint Pattie (Mint gelato with peppermint crème patties.)

Gingersnap (dark molasses + ginger + Saigon cinnamon + cloves + gingersnap cookies)

Ruby Red Grapefruit Sorbetto (We only use freshly squeezed grapefruits, of course.)

We also have delicious locally roasted coffees from La Terza, milk or organic soy steamers, real hot chocolates with Dojo made marshmallows, and green tea to warm you up while you shop at Findlay Market. And don’t forget we have gift cards for the gelato connoisseur in your life this holiday season.  See you soon!

Dojo Flavors December 5th – 11th

December 4, 2009 by dojogelato

Lately we have been exploring winter friendly gelati flavors at Dojo and are excited to create them for you throughout December! And, as always, we have locally roasted La Terza coffees, real hot chocolates, tea, gelato cakes and pies and gift cards for your holiday shopping at Findlay Market.

Here are this week’s gelati and sorbetti flavors:

Mexican Vanilla

Truffle Shuffle (dark chocolate gelato + French chocolate truffles)

Grapefruit-Ginger Sorbetto (One reason we love December is because ruby red grapefruits are in season. We juice each fresh grapefruit by hand (no prepackaged juice or concrete) then add a generous amount of ginger. We love how the ginger adds a bit of warmth to this sorbetto.

Honey Lavender (Organic lavender flowers from Herbs and Spice that we steep in local honey. First a wave of lavender washes over you and then comes the sweet clean taste of honey. A friend of Dojo told us that if you could turn a Danielle Steel novel into gelato this is what it would taste like. We think that’s a good thing, right?

Pistachio

Cranberry-Orange Sorbetto

Vietnamese Coffee (made with La Terza espresso)

Couturier Goat Cheese + Wild Amarena Cherries (If we were forced to pick a favorite this week, it would be the Couturier Goat Cheese and Amarena Cherry gelato. Tangy French goat cheese paired with slightly sour wild cherries imported from Italy. This gelato will make you want to slow dance all night long. Oh-la-la!)

See y’all soon at Dojo!

Cincinnati Magazine Names Dojo Gelato “Best of the City”!

November 28, 2009 by dojogelato

Best Cincinnati Gelato Dojo Gelato

Dojo Gelato has been chosen as Cincinnati’s best gelato by the editors of Cincinnati Magazine!  Here is what they had to say:

At Dojo Gelato in Findlay Market, owner Michael Christner makes small batches by hand using local ingredients. Porkopolis (maple gelato with candied bacon) and Lavender Honey are our faves, but we heard a businessman in a natty pinstripe suit declare that he had driven 10 miles out of his way for one scoop of their smoky, sexed-up Dutch Chocolate.

We are honored that our fresh, authentic gelato and original flavors have been recognized.  We would like to send a huge thank you to our friends and family, Neltner’s Farm, Herbs and Spice, Findlay Market, 3 Feet, Vine Street Interactive, Fox Paw Ridge Farm, Mark Bodenstein, Hunter Thomas of 20 Brix, Kroeger & Sons, Poeme, Dawson Belobrajdic, the local food blogging community, Adam Pearson, Take the CakeSoapbox Cincinnati, Over-the-Rhine Chamber of Commerce, La Terza Artisan Coffee, the Hyde Park Farmers’ Market, Happen Inc., the Dojo team, and, most importantly, you, our customers for helping us achieve so much.

We are humbled to be a part of the “Best of the City,” a list that includes many of Dojo’s local favorites, like Riverside Korean, Slim’s, and Molly Wellmann’s cocktails. Many thanks to Cincinnati Magazine and you, our customers, for your support.

Sincerely,

Michael Christner
Owner, Dojo Gelato

November 20, 2009 by dojogelato

Here  are our flavors for the next seven days at Dojo. Needless to say it’s pretty much the start of the holiday season and we didn’t hold back. You deserve authentic and fresh gelati. You deserve explosions of sensory ecstasy. You deserve:

Mexican Vanilla

Vietnamese Coffee (sweetened milk gelato + locally roasted coffee from La Terza Roasterie)

Dutch Chocolate

Fluffernutter  (peanut butter gelato + toasted peanuts + marshmallow fluff)

Cranberry-Orange Sorbetto

Honey Toasted Almond

Cinnamon

Peppermint Patty (mint gelato + peppermint patties)

Lemon-Rosemary Sorbetto

Mascarpone & Wild Amarena Cherry (triple cream cheese gelato+ wild amarena cherries folded throughout. This. Will. Be. The. One. You’ll see.)

Pumpkin Spice

Porkopolis (maple gelato + bacon from Kroeger & Sons that we candy)

In addition to all the wonderful gelati excitement at Dojo this weekend, we are also taking part in Cincinnati Unchained, sponsored by BuyCincy.com. This Saturday at Dojo Gelato when you purchase a $25 gift card, you will get an extra $5 card for free. We are paying you to shop locally!

Also, and best yet, we are now providing Chuck Pfahler’s La Terza coffees at Dojo. For our cup o’ joe we are serving Daterra Estate’s Villa Borghesi, it is sustainably grown in Brazil and is Rainforest Alliance certified. For our affogatos and espresso shakes we are pulling shots of Terza’s house espresso blend, which has been a favorite of ours on cooler mornings at the Hyde Park Farmers’ Market when Chuck is pulling shots like the Bruce Lee of artisan coffee. Both beans are delicious and we are proud to support another independent business in Cincinnati.

See y’all soon!

Cincinnati Unchained + Dojo Gelato!

November 17, 2009 by dojogelato

Cincinnati Unchained

We are happy to announce that Dojo Gelato is participating in this year’s  BuyCincy’s Cincinnati Unchained. The event takes  place Saturday Nov. 21st throughout Cincinnati. Participating businesses are offering discounts, gifts and charitable donations during this annual campaign focusing on locally-owned businesses.

According to BuyCincy, “Every dollar you spend at a locally-owned business generates  approximately three times more economic activity than a dollar spent at  the typical ‘big-box.’ By choosing to shop locally-owned for just one day, we can help to improve Cincinnati’s economy.”  It’s sometimes a matter of convenience or habit to use the Internet or visit a mall, but shopping locally helps not only independently owned businesses, it also helps our city’s economy to keep growing.

Dojo Gelato is participating in this years Unchained event with a special offer on our gift cards. For every $25 gift card you purchase at Dojo on November 21st, you will receive a $5 card for free. Dojo gift cards can be used for any item at our store including hand packed pints, made-to-order gelato cakes/pies, and even toward catering events with our gealto cart. But the true reward in our offer is that you’ll not only be supporting a locally owned business with the purchase of a gift card, you’ll also be supporting a merchant at Findlay Market (Ohio’s oldest continually operated community market).

Fellow Cincinnati Unchained businesses for 2009 include:

Flavors November 14th – 20th

November 13, 2009 by dojogelato

Here are the flavors for the next seven days at Dojo!

Mascarpone (Triple-cream cheese from Italy, a touch of Madagascar Vanilla Bean and gelato. If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands! If you’re happy and you know it and you really want to show it…)

Bourbon Vanilla

Dutch Chocolate

Cranberry-Orange Sorbetto (Taking the tartness of the Cranberries to an entirely new level with just a whisper of Orange, like a Siren of the sea.)

French Caramel

Honey Toasted Almond

Christian Moerlein Stout (Adding fresh milk and cream to the Moerlein Stout brings out the maltiness of the brew. Also, there is a hint of coffee lingering in this gelato. Very, very tasty.)

Cinnamon (Saigon Cinnamon from Vietnam. A wee bit hotter and sweeter than your typical cinnamon.)

Pumpkin Spice

Banana Maple (Two of our favorite flavors  united. This gelato reminds us of warm French toast with bananas that have been simmered in maple syrup on the stove top. Pair with our Cinnamon gelato for an experience you won’t soon forget.)

Apple Cider Sorbetto (with Chesapeake Apples from Backyard Orchard)

Hazelnut

See you oh so soon!

Love, Dojo

Flavors at Dojo November 7th – 13th

November 6, 2009 by dojogelato

Dutch Chocolate (There it is. Over in the corner. Dojo’s Dutch Chocolate Gelato. Doing a hundred and one push-ups.)

Kinderschokolade (Crumbled up Kinder Chocolate bars from Germany with our Fior di Latte gelato.)

Mexican Vanilla (Said to be the “Queen of Vanilla” because it contains the highest concentration of vanillin. The aroma is intoxicating, like Salma Hayek or Javier Bardem.)

Peppermint Stracciatella (The words stracciatella comes from the Italian stracciato for “torn apart.” That’s what happens when we melt milk chocolate and spread it, still warm, throughout this gelato. Ribbons of chocolate instantly harden and tear apart as it meets the cooler gelato. The result? “I get lost, in your eyes. And I feel my spirits rise and soar like the wind….”

Coconut (Did you know that next month it’s going to be summer in Australia?)

Cranberry Sorbetto (The fresh cranberry’s give this beautiful sorbetto a natural vibrant pink color. Refreshingly tart!)

Churro (Mexican Vanilla Bean + Saigon Cinnamon)

French Caramel (Fleur de sel from Brittany, France + Dojo made caramel. Once a young woman visited our store and was overtly curious about our gelati. She approached our display case. She looked. She sampled. She looked some more. Then she spotted our French Caramel. We offered her a taste. She declined. Instead, she immediately requested a large serving. While giving her change we spied her enjoying her gelato. Was she pleased? It was then she admitted to us that she was from Paris and the taste of our French Caramel gelato reminded her of home. We will remember her compliment forever.)

Pumpkin and Spice (If you could turn your grandmother’s pumpkin pie in to gelato, this is what it would taste like. Promise.)

Cardamom (Cardamom—a member of the ginger family—gives this gelato an intense fragrance. The flavor association that comes to mind for our Cardamom gelato is chai tea.)

Nocciola (The ingredients for our hazelnut gelato: Some milk, some cream, some sugar, a gang of hazelnuts. No fillers. No extenders. No “cost effective” shortcuts with nut flavored extracts. When we get daydreamy about gelato, it’s usual because of our Nocciola. Try pairing this one with our Dutch chocolate for another classic flavor, Gianduja.

Chesapeake Apple Sorbetto (Local Chesapeake apples from Backyard Orchard. Two words that keep being mentioned with this sorbetto are “crisp” and “fresh.” A nice palette cleanser.)

See y’all soon!

Love, Dojo

PS–Also, we now have swanky Dojo gift cards available at the store! They make the perfect gift for all gelato and ice cream lovers in your world.
