Last week Cooking with Caitlin celebrated Cincinnati Porkopolis-style at her monthly Third Thursday event at the McAlpin. We think our Porkoplis gelato looks pretty damn sexy on her handrolled pizzelle trumpet. To see more photos from the event follow this link.
We love a good underdog story. That is why we are asking you to help us topple a Goliath in this year’s City Beat “Best of Cincinnati” Reader’s Poll for ice cream.
The odds are steep. Why? Because the category of “Best Ice Cream” has already been seeded by City Beat with the runners up from 2009. But don’t fret. You can still vote for Dojo Gelato! Under the “Eats” heading you will find the ice cream category. Under this category’s drop down window select the “Create Your Option” choice. In the text box provided you can write in Dojo Gelato for best ice cream. Just follow the link below.

Please take a moment to show your support for the little ice cream shop that could, Dojo Gelato. And don’t worry. Your grandparents don’t have to know that “Raspberry Chip” doesn’t really do it for you anymore since that time at Dojo when you enjoyed our unique, handmade Italian-style ice creams created in small batches from fresh ingredients.
(Out of the current nominees, 20% are national chains. What’s up with that?)
If you have a moment, read this great post from epi/ventures about her recent trip to Dojo:
“On days when I find myself in the supermarket, walking past boxed cereals and shrink wrapped chicken, I feel disconnected. Lost in a maze of homogenized products and storyless people.
Not so at Findlay market. I went last week to get my first taste of Dojo Gelato and my experience was just the opposite. Personal, artisanal and distinctly Cincinnati.
Behind me, the spice colonel and his fleet of helpers displayed fennel and star anise like diamond rings inside of a display case. And in front of me, the woman at Dojo talked about her gelato with the mystique and wonder of a mother describing her newborn baby…”
The full post is here.
For your tasting pleasure, here are the gelati we will be creating for the next seven days at Dojo. Flavors are a little boozie this week to celebrate the New Year.
Bourbon Barrel Vanilla (Madagascar Vanilla beans cured in barrels once used for aging Kentucky bourbon. )
Banana’s Foster (We can’t make it down to the Big Easy for this year’s Sugar Bowl, so instead we created a gelato reminiscent of Brennan Restaurant’s famous dessert. Banana gelato + Dojo made caramel sauce.)
Dutch Chocolate
Pistachio
Danablu Cheese and Clover Honey (Yet another tasty combination of savory and sweet. The Danish blue cheese in this gelato makes it super funky. But in a good way. Like a smurf.)
Pear Sorbetto
Rosie’s Egg Nog (Egg Nog gelato + fresh nutmeg + Four Rose’s Bourbon)
Vietnamese Coffee
Rum Raisin (Bacardi Rum soaked raisins blended with Bourbon Vanilla gelato…and then more Bacardi.)
Happy New Year to you and yours! Hope to see everyone soon….
Love, Dojo

The Elvis (Porkopolis gelato + Taste of Belgium waffle)
We have a nice mention in today’s dining section of the Cincinnati Enquirer! Our Porkopolis gelato–made with maple and candied bacon–was one of Polly Campbell’s favorite food finds in 2009. Hopefully she can drop by in 2010 for Dojo’s off the menu gelato sandwich, “The Elvis.” One really hasn’t lived until you have experienced our Porkopolis gelato on a fresh Taste of Belgium waffle.
We created some special gelati in honor of the holidays. Hope you can visit us at Dojo Gelato to have a taste!
Mexican Vanilla
Spiced Persimmon (Persimmon + Allspice + Cracked Black Pepper)*
Vietnamese Coffee (Sweet Milk + La Terza Coffee’s “Villa Borghesi” Roast)
Beurre Noisette Brittle
Rose Petal Pistachio
Lemon – Rosemary Sorbetto
Gingersnap (Molasses + Ginger + Gingersnap Cookies)
Dutch Chocolate
Peppermint Stracciatella
Rosie’s Nog (Egg Nog + Fresh Nutmeg + Four Roses Bourbon)

The cooler it gets outside the more inspired we are to transform some of our favorite flavors into gelato! For the next few days at Dojo:
Mexican Vanilla
Cranberry Orange Sorbetto
Vietnamese Coffee (with locally roasted La Terza espresso)
Beurre Noisette Brittle (Brown butter with crushed peanut brittle pieces throughout. Yum!)
Rose Petal Pistachio (Can a gelato be thought of as lovely?)
Dutch Chocolate
Organic Lavender and Honey
Peppermint Pattie (Mint gelato with peppermint crème patties.)
Gingersnap (dark molasses + ginger + Saigon cinnamon + cloves + gingersnap cookies)
Ruby Red Grapefruit Sorbetto (We only use freshly squeezed grapefruits, of course.)
We also have delicious locally roasted coffees from La Terza, milk or organic soy steamers, real hot chocolates with Dojo made marshmallows, and green tea to warm you up while you shop at Findlay Market. And don’t forget we have gift cards for the gelato connoisseur in your life this holiday season. See you soon!
